What is a Trigger Point?

A trigger point is a knot or band of muscle that forms after trauma, overuse, or injury. If you have trigger points, your muscle may not be fully relaxed, which leads to limited range of motion in the affected area. You may be able to feel these knots under the skin, and they can irritate the nerves around them, causing “referred pain” or pain that is felt in another part of the body. A trigger point may also produce pain radiating from the affected area.

Trigger points usually occur after injury or surgery, or in association with chronic conditions such as tension headaches, chronic back pain, herniated discs, and fractures. Left untreated, trigger points can cause chronic pain and restrict your range of motion.

Trigger point therapy treats painful areas of muscle or knots that form when your muscles do not relax. We inject a blend of all-natural pain relief medication into a trigger point and any related tender points to relax tight muscles and relieve pain.

The procedure is safe, painless, and takes only a few minutes in our office. Side effects of trigger point therapy are rare but may include mild tenderness and bruising. You may continue your normal activities on the same day as the injection. You’ll notice an improvement in pain over the next days as your tight muscles relax.

Trigger Points in the Back and Neck

Myofascial pain often results from a muscle injury or repetitive strain. When your muscles are stressed or injured, you can form trigger points (contracted knots) that cause pain and tightness. If you have a muscle knot in your neck, it may refer pain down your spine to your back. Active myofascial trigger points in your neck and back are quite common.

From neck pain to low back pain, trigger points are a common cause of several types of spine pain. Many doctors have yet to understand how trigger points produce referred pain, but we can soothe the pain.

Our trigger point therapy in Columbus, Ohio is designed to treat myofascial trigger points effectively. Our doctor examines the texture, tightness, and movement of muscles, fascia, tendons, ligaments, and nerves. We test for trigger points in your upper back, shoulders, and neck.
